Google Colab, short for Google Colaboratory, is a cloud-based platform provided by Google that allows users to write and execute Python code in a browser environment.

One very interesting feature of Colab is that it can integrate well with Google Drive. Let’s first have a basic understanding of the folder structure of Google Drive.

  • My Drive: This is the primary location where all files and folders reside. It’s the equivalent of your main directory or home folder. By default, any files you create or upload will be placed here unless you specifically choose to put them in a different folder. Within the My Driver folder, we will have different Folders, created and managed by you, Folders function much like traditional file folders on your computer. You can create subfolders within folders to further organize your files hierarchically. Besides Folders, several folders only contain soft links to the files kept in My Drive. For example, the Recent folder displays a list of files you’ve recently opened or accessed; the Starred folder contains important files that are annotated by you.
  • Shared with Me: This section contains files and folders that other users have shared with you. These files are not owned by you but are accessible to you because they’ve been shared. We can regard the folder Shared with Me as a read-only folder.
